Istanbul stopover guide

Turkish Airlines flies to Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, and routes half of Europe and North America through Istanbul on the way. It is the most rewarding hub on the Pakistan corridor for a stopover: two continents, imperial mosques and the best layover food of any hub city. Turkish Airlines has actively promoted stopovers, historically offering free city tours and even free stopover hotels on long connections.

Need to know

  • Turkish Airlines has long run a complimentary layover tour program for eligible long connections, and a stopover hotel program on some fares. Availability and conditions change, so confirm directly with Turkish Airlines when you book.
  • Many passport holders need an e-visa for Turkiye, which is normally a quick online process. Sort it before the trip if you plan to leave the airport.
  • The new Istanbul Airport (IST) is far north of the center. Budget roughly an hour each way by metro or bus, more in traffic. The old advice about quick taxi hops belongs to the old Ataturk airport, not this one.

What your hours buy you

Under 7 hours

Stay in the terminal. IST is enormous but walkable, with serious food options. The distance to the city eats shorter layovers.

7 to 14 hours

City sprint: metro to Sultanahmet, Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia from outside, a proper kebab and Turkish tea, then back. Check whether your layover qualifies for an airline-guided tour first, it removes all the logistics.

14 hours or more

Stay the night in Sultanahmet or Karakoy. Morning mosque visit before the crowds, Grand Bazaar, ferry across the Bosphorus for lunch in Asia, and you are back at IST by evening.

Frequently asked questions

Does Turkish Airlines really offer a free Istanbul tour?

Turkish Airlines has run a well-known complimentary tour program for passengers with long layovers for years, with fixed daily departures from the airport. Conditions and eligibility change, so verify the current program with Turkish Airlines before counting on it.

Do I need a visa to leave Istanbul airport?

Many travellers need a Turkish e-visa, which is usually issued online quickly, while some passports enter visa-free. Check the official Turkish e-visa site for your passport before the trip. Pakistani passport holders should check conditions carefully as requirements differ.

How early should I be back at IST?

Three hours before an international departure is the honest answer. The airport is huge, security lines swing wildly, and the metro from Sultanahmet alone takes about an hour.
