Doha stopover guide
Qatar Airways serves more Pakistani cities than any other Gulf carrier, so millions of Pakistan trips pass through Doha every year. Hamad International is routinely ranked among the best airports in the world, which changes the calculus: at DOH, staying inside the terminal is a real option, not a punishment. But Doha itself is 15 minutes away and very easy on a medium layover.
Need to know
- Qatar has been generous with visa-free entry and transit arrangements for many nationalities, and Qatar Airways has sold cheap stopover hotel packages. As everywhere, rules shift, so confirm your passport situation with the airline or official Qatari sources.
- The metro red line connects the airport to the center in about 15 to 20 minutes, which makes Doha the fastest airport-to-city hop of the three big hubs.
- Summer heat is serious: from May to September plan indoor activities in the daytime and save the corniche and Souq Waqif for after dark.

Under 5 hours
Enjoy the airport. The giant teddy bear, the indoor garden at the Orchard, showers and quiet rooms. Hamad is genuinely pleasant.
5 to 10 hours
Metro downtown for Souq Waqif, karak tea and the corniche skyline view, then back. The short transfer time makes this comfortable where it would be tight in Istanbul.
10 to 24 hours
Add the Museum of Islamic Art or the National Museum, and consider a desert trip to the Inland Sea if you have a full day. Qatar Airways stopover hotel deals can make an overnight cheap.

Frequently asked questions
Is it worth leaving Hamad airport on a short layover?
Below 5 hours, probably not, and Hamad is comfortable enough that staying is fine. From about 5 or 6 hours the 15 minute metro ride makes a Souq Waqif dinner realistic, which is the best quick taste of Qatar you can get.
Can Pakistani travellers transit Doha without a visa?
Airside transit at Hamad requires no visa. Entering Qatar depends on nationality and current policy, and Qatar has run both visa-free lists and transit visa schemes. Check the current position for your passport with Qatar Airways or official Qatari sources before planning to leave the terminal.
Qatar Airways cancelled my onward leg, what now?
