Dubai stopover guide

Emirates and flydubai funnel a huge share of Pakistan traffic through Dubai, and fares with a long Dubai gap are often the cheapest on the whole route. The good news: DXB is one of the easiest airports anywhere to turn a layover into a mini holiday. Karachi to Dubai is under two hours, so even Pakistan-side families use it as a weekend add-on.

Need to know

  • Many nationalities get a visa on arrival in the UAE, and the UAE has offered transit visas for longer layovers. Rules depend on your passport and change without notice, so check with your airline or the official UAE channels before relying on leaving the airport.
  • Terminal 3 (Emirates) and Terminal 2 (flydubai) are on opposite sides of the runway. Allow real time if your connection switches terminals.
  • The metro red line runs straight from the airport to the Burj Khalifa area. You do not need a car for a classic first visit.

What your hours buy you

Under 6 hours

Stay airside. DXB has showers, sleep pods and enough food streets to pass the time. Leaving the airport is tight once you count immigration both ways.

6 to 12 hours

Doable downtown run: metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall, fountain show after sunset, metro back. Keep 3 hours of buffer for security and immigration.

12 to 48 hours

Proper mini trip: desert safari in the afternoon, old town and gold souk in the morning, or a beach day. Book activities with free cancellation in case your flight moves.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Dubai stopover worth it on a Pakistan trip?

Often yes. Emirates and flydubai fares with a long Dubai gap are frequently cheaper than short connections, and Dubai is compact enough that 8 free hours already buys you the Burj Khalifa and the fountain show. Treat anything over 12 hours as a bonus city break.

Can I leave Dubai airport during a layover?

That depends on your passport, not on the ticket. Many nationalities can enter the UAE on arrival, and transit visa schemes have existed for others. Check current rules with your airline or official UAE sources before you plan to leave the terminal, and leave at least 3 hours of buffer for getting back through security.

What if my onward flight to Pakistan is delayed overnight?

If both flights are on one ticket, the airline owns the problem and normally provides rebooking, and on longer delays meals or a hotel. On separate tickets you carry the risk yourself, which is why we flag self-transfer itineraries clearly.
